The PCC has been successful in its bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Grants for Places of Worship programme. The grant of £140,400 has helped us undertake urgent structural repairs to the church, and will also enable us to provide exciting opportunities to explore the history of both church and village.

If you would like to get involved why not come along to our Heritage Open Evening on Monday 2nd July at 7:00pm.

As part of the heritage project we will be:

  • surveying the churchyard and its monuments, creating a plan and record of graves to help local people and visitors wishing to trace their family history or searching for ancestors buried here at St Helena’s.
  • designing new interpretation for the church and a create a family trail to help visitors explore the church and discover Thoroton’s history.
  • researching the life and work of pioneering nurse Ethel Gordon Fenwick who is buried in the churchyard, and produce a resource to share her story with visitors.
